This review gives a glance on the electromagnetic wave absorption/shielding materials constituting self-healing property from the invention to evolution. It revolves around the wave absorption efficiency of the synthesized materials, their self-healing capacity with the involved chemistry, and the stimuli which trigger self-healing in the material. Various multi-component heterogeneous interfaces with different structures like layers, yolk-shell, hollow and core-shell have been discussed in detail with their absorption mechanism. The review summarizes the properties of different components used in synthesizing the absorbent with highlighting the effect of shape of the material on amount of waves it absorbs. At the end, applications of wave absorbing materials are discussed keeping various spheres in mind like stealth technology, energy harvesting, future communication modes and architectural engineering.
